Wow! Coronado Training Center wins… and wins… and wins…

Congratulations to the Coronado Training Center (CTC) who walked away with numerous awards from a recent martial arts tournament in San Diego.
On September 11, 2010 the kids put their Taekwondo skills on display at a friendly martial arts tournament. The children, who varied in age from 10 all the way up to 20, have been receiving training in the traditional Korean art form for multiple years.
Chief Instructor Boyle said of the children and young adults, “I’m truly proud of our students’ performance in the tournament and that they behaved themselves as quality martial artists, young men, and young women.”
CTC students sparred against others from all over Southern California. Greg Rathbone (CHS class of ‘08), Owen Heidenreich (age 13), and Annie Cutchen (CHS class of ‘10) took home gold medals for winning their divisions. Juliana Solinap (age 10) received a silver medal for placing second in her division. Garrett Clark (CHS class of ‘09) took home the bronze. And Gustav Ostermarker (age 11) placed fourth in the toughest division of the tournament.
The children also demonstrated their forms, called “poomses”, to the judges. A poomse is a prearranged sequence of martial arts techniques that can be performed either with or without the use of a weapon. In this portion of the competition, Emma Cleveland (age 10), Dylan Stella (age 11), Owen Heidenreich, and Greg Rathbone took home gold medals. Abigail Boyle (age 10) and Courtney Douglas (age 12) took home silver medals. And Juliana Solinap took home a bronze medal.
In addition to self defense, Taekwondo also stresses the importance of courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self control, and an indomitable spirit. Chief Instructor Boyle was extremely pleased to receive an email after the tournament from the event organizer (a sixth degree black belt and former Olympian) commending his students for being “polite and respectful both inside and outside of the ring”.
